Kshititi Nagarkar, Architect for The Healthcare Sector
“Decisions on the Infrastructure in the Health Care Sector are based on costs rather than their appropriateness of use for the function they cater”, feels Ms. Kshititi Nagarkar, an Architect in the pursuit of creating healing spaces. Kshititi works along with her team to create aesthetic, sustainable and affordable facilities that help her doctor clients improve their practice and the well-being of their patients.
An Architect from Sir JJ College of Architecture, Mumbai, Kshititi is among the very few Healthcare trained Architects in the country and has a rich experience of over 15 years in this field. A Masters of Architecture program at JJ took her to varied institutes of Healthcare from Private to Public facilities and made her aware of ground realities.
It is rare for an Architect to work exclusively for the Healthcare Sector. Typically firms have Healthcare as one of their verticals, with limited focus. She feels there is a huge disparity in the provision for healthcare systems in the Private and the Public sector and the huge costs of infrastructure spent in an insensitive manner. Her focus while designing and planning remain NABH (National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Health care Providers) compliant and to optimize costs along with provision of aesthetical interior and exterior spaces which are easy to maintain.
According to Kshititi, “in a country where the role of private players is continuously increasing in the Healthcare sector, there is still an insufficiency of Hospital Beds and dismal Number of Healthcare Centers. Healthcare facilities are getting expensive and almost non-accessible for the poor. The money in Public as well as Private Sector is mainly spent on the Equipment and Manpower while the Infrastructure is compromised in the Public set-up and over-emphasized in the Private set-up. Further in an attempt to copy from the west, environments created are rather detrimental to people and patients rather than promoting health”.
She feels the need of the hour is to judiciously provide uniform healthcare facilities for the masses. Healthcare Facilities need to reach to the remotest of places through sustainable infrastructure which optimize on the planning by adopting GREEN building practices suitable to Indian climate while maintaining NABH guidelines for uniform standard of Healthcare facilities throughout the country.
